❄️ Braving the Freeze: Our Day at the Crisis Icebreaker, Tooting Bec Lido

This year’s Crisis Icebreaker at Tooting Bec Lido on Saturday 31 January was a brilliant blend of chilly water, sunshine, friendly competition and community spirit — all for a fantastic cause. Hosted by the national charity Crisis to help end homelessness, this cold-water challenge brought together swimmers of all levels for a morning that was as rewarding as it was invigorating.

🌞 Great Weather, Icy Waters

Despite the 6 °C water temperature, the sun made friendly appearances throughout the morning, warming spirits even if it didn’t quite warm our toes. Standing on the edge of the lido, the contrast between the crisp air and the suggestion of sunshine was both surreal and uplifting — the perfect metaphor for the event itself.

🏊 Team Relay Fun

One of the highlights was the team relay, we had entered two teams of four. Each team took on 4 x 30 m widths in relay style, and the energy was electric. There were cheers, splashes and high-fives, and by the end of the race — amid plenty of playful banter — one of our teams emerged victorious! The sense of friendly rivalry and shared achievement was infectious.

Swimming in a relay like this adds a competitive edge to a charitable event — and whether you’re an experienced cold water swimmer or just giving it a go for the first time, there’s something thrilling about racing with your teammates against the icy clock.

🐢 Inflatable Challenge: Creativity & Chaos

Next up was the inflatable challenge… and what a spectacle! The rule was simple: bring your own inflatable and swim a width without touching the bottom. We had an unforgettable mix of floats — from elegant mermaids, a dolphin, and a turtle, to a hilarious quacker pack (yes, the duck inflatable 🦆 stole a lot of hearts). Out of 10 participants, all 8 of us took part in the inflatable swim, showcasing creativity and sheer determination in equal measure.

Watching friends twist, wiggle and paddle their way across the pool on whimsical inflatables was one of those moments you’ll be talking about for years.

☕ Community & Cause

Beyond the cold, the Icebreaker is always about coming together for a purpose. Between swims, participants sipped hot drinks, exchanged stories, laughed off the shock of the temperature, and shared why they’d taken part. There were prizes to be won, encouraging smiles from fellow swimmers and volunteers, and a real sense of doing something meaningful.

Crisis runs these events not just as a challenge, but to bring people together and raise vital funds to help people experiencing homelessness across the UK — a goal that makes every shiver worth it.

🧤 Final Thoughts

By the end of the morning, cold bodies were warmed by community spirit, and we all left with a powerful reminder that stepping out of your comfort zone — even for a few chilly minutes — can make a positive impact far beyond the edge of the pool.
